Safety

Safety in the shop is the highest priority in this room. It covers using tools correctly and leaving the space clean and safe for everyone who comes in after you.

Before you touch anything

Every student needs the THS Safety Contract read and signed, by you and by a guardian.

The rules you agreed to

• Always get a verbal OK from Mr. Hubbard before operating any tool in the shop.
• Tools not on the tool wall require you to watch and pass a safety video quiz before use.
• Tools marked with caution tape — black and yellow stripes — may only be used under direct supervision. He has to be watching you.
• You may only use a tool you have passed the safety test for. Not a similar tool. That tool.
• Take the right precautions for the tool you're on: cutting mats, clamps, and the rest.
• Pretending to put yourself or anyone else in danger counts as unsafe behavior.
• Maintain a clean workspace, and hand the next student a clean workspace.
• Never eat or drink in the Engineering Shop.
• Report every accident immediately — a broken tool, an injury, a lost tool. All of it.

Materials

Wasting materials carelessly or on purpose is unacceptable and will lead to a detention. It also costs you on project scores, where material waste is a line item.

• Try scrap before new. Always.
• Any cabinet with a label is yours to open. Cabinets with no label are off limits.
• You have access to the tool wall and the materials cart. See where things are.
• Store your project in the bin rack, not on a bench.
• Ask if you're unsure whether you should be using a material.

Cleanliness

Failing to help clean the shop lowers your grade — it's one of the standards scored every week. See the grading page for what meeting it looks like.
